This Time It’s Really Going

SCIFICTION, that is:

As of Friday, June 15, 2007, SCI FICTION will no longer be availabe on SCIFI.COM.
SCIFI.COM would like to thank all those who contributed
and those who read the short stories over the past few years.

That’s Friday. So go, read.

(via Gwenda, who also points out that you can create a personal archive of the site using this; or you could browse the ED SF Project for suggestions of which stories to read. My picks, if I had to pick: “Anyway” by M. Rickert, “The Voluntary State” by Christopher Rowe, “The Empire of Ice Cream” by Jeffrey Ford, “The Women Men Don’t See” by James Tiptree Jr, “What I Didn’t See” by Karen Joy Fowler, and “New Light on the Drake Equation” by Ian R. MacLeod. But you’re going to have a hard time finding a bad choice. I wonder if we could get that Best of SCIFICTION now?)

  1. I tried for several years to do a Best of SCIFICTION. When I was still working there we couldn’t get any publishers to commit. We had one offer that seemed real but the publisher never sent us the deal letter and during that time we waited and waited and couldn’t go elsewhere. After that, there was never the same momentum and a few possibles fell through.

Then finally this year it looked like it would happen in time for Capclave (not a best of but more a sampling) but alas, we couldn’t get anyone at NBC interested in signing a contract for it so that’s that.

  2. That’s a damn shame. I think we more than half-expect all this internet stuff to be around forever in a way we perhaps don’t for the old pulp magazines, so when this happens there’s a sense of real loss.

The thing Ellen should be really proud of is that everyone of us who read those stories would pick a different top 5, from the originals or the classics. ‘The Screwfly Solution’ or ‘When It Changed,’ ‘The Ugly Chickens’ or ‘Aye And Gommorrah’, ‘Consider Her Ways’ or ‘The Golem’ I could go on. We all could.

And lets not forget that the EDSF Project has produced some very good essays on individual short stories from this list.
